Why I’m not getting an iPhone

I’m an Apple “cultist”. I have an iMac, a MacBook and a 2nd gen iPod. Needless to say, I love Apple products.

Yesterday, iPhone 3G was launched here in the Philippines. BUT — I’m not getting one. Here are my reasons why I’m not:

  • I’m a Smart post-paid subscriber. While I don’t have anything against Globe, I will not change my number nor get a new one. I hate Apple’s telco lock scheme!
  • I love my new Nokia E71. For a basic business phone, it has everything iPhone can do, less the sexiness but more functionality.
  • IMO, iPhone is too expensive. My Nokia E71 is just a little over P20,000. iPhone 3G’s 8GB is aroundP P35k.
  • I don’t need it.
  • I like it, but I don’t need it.
  • Ok, seriously, I don’t have extra money to buy one. If I have, I may have gotten one. :D

“Leopard” on Ubuntu

This is freakin’ cool! This is the power of open source operating system. Would you imagine that Mac OS X 10.5 a.k.a Leopard can be emulated? Well, at least the look. Ubuntu can.

Is this screenshot a Leopard? Nope, it isn’t!

Here’s the tutorial on how to do this on Ubuntu.

Macbook Air: Apple is finally wrong

A friend of mine called an iPhone a “glorified expensive brick”. I’m calling the new Macbook Air a “glorified mistake”. CrunchGear and Yuga agree.

I just think that Apple went too far with their excessive passion for beauty. Beauty without brain is a flower vase. And I just think that Apple sacrificed a lot of basic computing features to make a Macbook sexier as it is through Air. That’s coming from a Mac cult member, namely, myself.

Bill Gates’ last day at work

Bill Gates, the great software guy, is finally retiring. How can his last day at work would look like? This video is part of his last keynote address delivered at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show. I always see this guy as a nerd. I never thought he can be this funny.

Anyway, thanks Bill, for the good and the bad.

Top 10 reasons IT won’t support the iPhone

Ok, I just said I realized I’m part of the Apple cult, but this time I’ve gotta criticize. Kinda part of the healing process.

The iPhone I’ve been dreaming about continues to receive a thumbs down from different consumer sectors. FORTUNE has released their own Top 10 reasons IT won’t support the iPhone.

Here are their reasons:

1. Doesn’t natively support push business email or over-the-air calendar sync.
2. Doesn’t accommodate third-party applications, including those internally developed.
3. Doesn’t support securing data on the device through encryption.
4. Can’t be remotely locked or wiped in the event of a lost or stolen device.
5. Lacks a hard keypad that provides feedback, which isn’t ideal for rapid and accurate input.
6. Has limited service provider support and its carrier lock-in inhibits flexibility.
7. Comes with a premium price tag.
8. Is only the first generation.
9. Lacks a removable battery, so when the battery kicks it, so does the device.
10. Lacks case studies of firms that have deployed it enterprisewide
