Mark 1:43-45 Then Jesus sent him on his way and told him sternly, “Go right over to the priest and let him examine you. Don’t talk to anyone along the way. take along the offerng required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy, so everyone will ave proof of your healing”. But as the man went on his way, he spread the news, telling everyone what had happened to him. As a result, such crowds soon surrounded Jesus that he couldn’t enter a town anywhere publicly. He had to stay out in the secluded places, and people from everywhere came to him there.
In the time of Jesus, when you have leprosy, you are secluded in the society. The people hates, they don’t want to be identified or even to be with you. They are basically the outcast of the society.
And Jesus healed the guy with leprosy in Mark 1. Several observations:
1. Why would Jesus command him to perform the necessary Jewish rituals for those who have been healed of leprosy? I believe the reason is because Jesus wants him to be restored not only physically but socially as well. Being part of the community is a basic component of our life.
2. Why would Jesus prevent him from telling others about what happened along the way? I believe Jesus wants him to focus on the important thing at that moment — that is his restoration in the society.
3. Why would the healed man “disobey” Jesus and tell others about what happened to him? The reason, I believe, is this: our humanness can only contain so much of excitement. If there will be no outlet, it will burst. I can imagine the man — he’s so excited for what Jesus did to him. He wanted to tell somebody, but he can’t until he performed the rituals. “But I got to tell somebody, I’ve gotta tell!” And because he can’t contain it anymore, he told someone. And then another, and another… There was no record of Jesus reprimanding him for “disobeying” his instruction in this instance. And I think it was cool with Jesus, he understands.
This is what I’m learning in these verses:
First, if ever I have sickness not only physically, it can be emotionally, relationally, socially, he wants me fully restored.
I can be healed emotionally, for instance by reading the word of God, or listening to the comforts of the Holy Spirit. But he wants me fully restored by restoring a broken relationship.
Secondly, I’ve got to relive the kind of excitement that I have experienced during the first time Jesus healed me. This is the fuel I need in telling others about the wonderful love of Jesus.
Lord Jesus, thank you for healing me spiritually, emotionally. Please help me restore broken relationship to complete the process. Help me remember the excitement I had that day when you saved me.
