The Gospel of Superman

Joy and I caught Superman Returns last Monday. It’s a heartwarming love story. Yes, unlike the previous Christopher Reeves series, this one’s more the Lois Lane-Superman love angle and not the typical whooss! whass! man of steel. Nonetheless, we enjoyed it and plans to get it on DVD — pirated or not. :D

According to this article, the director of the movie (who’s not a Christian, but a Jew), obviously and intentionally made parallelism of this movie to Christianity.

Take these, for instance:

Superman – Jesus Christ
Lex Luthor – Satan
kryptonite – sin
Superman was “killed” using a kryptonite dagger pierced on his side – looks similar to the cross story
Superman “rose again” from being dead in the hospital – resurrection story

Some interesting quotes:

Lois (to Superman): “The world doesn’t need a savior. And neither do I.”

Superman (to Lois): “You wrote that the world doesn’t need a savior. But everyday I hear people crying for one.”

Kitty (Lex’s girlfriend): “You’re not a god.”

Lex (to Kitty): “Gods are selfish beings who fly around in little red capes and don’t share their power with mankind.”

Jor-El (The Father): “They can be a great people, Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the Way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you—my only son.”

Interesting.

Yes! Exactly as I observed. A couple of other things:

    – after Superman “threw” the island beyond earth’s atmosphere, he fell back to earth with his arms outstretched, forming a cross figure.

    – I say the movie has a tinge of “The Da Vinci Code” because Superman turns out to have a child! (boo)

Ah yes, that I one. I also noticed it. I was telling myself during the movie, if I were to make parallelism to Christianity, I must be a The Da Vinci Code fan for giving Superman a child. :D

It’s also interesting how the writers named Superman’s father as “Jor-El” and Superman as “Kal-El”. We know that “El” in Hebrew means God. ;)

I read somewhere that the Jewish creators of Superman saw him as a Moses figure of sorts. He was sent by his family to a different place (to Earth vs. down the Nile) and was adopted by another family (the Kents vs. the Pharoah’s wife). Superman saves earthlings from all sorts of danger, Moses frees the Isrealites from Egypt’s oppression.

But then again, Moses is a type of Christ, isn’t he? :)

Yeah, we can actually look at it either way. Nonetheless, I’m amazed on how the Holywood has been interested on spiritual things these days — pro or anti Christianity alike.

Here’s another one: “You will carry me inside you all the days of your life; see my life through your eyes, as yours will be seen through mine. The son becomes the father and the father the son.”
