When the “Hyatt 10” — the 10 members of GMA cabinet, her economic team — resigned last Friday, the administration is quick to label them as traitors. But the one who received the most blows was former DSWD secretary Dinky Soliman. Known as the closest to the president, they said she even was leading the cabinet in singing “If we hold on together” after President Arroyo delivered her now famous “I am sorry” speech. Luli Arroyo, the president’s daughter, came out in a TV interview sounding like her mother beating poor Dinky black and blue. Could she be the next taray queen?
If they are looking for traitors, search not very far. Some are still in the current cabinet.
During the Erap regime, former AFP chief of staff now DILG Secretary Angelo Reyes, was one of Erap’s most trusted friend. In fact, a few weeks before Erap was thrown out of Malacanang, Reyes even made him the ninong in his daughter’s wedding. He became AFP chief under him. But when “crisis” came — we now call EDSA Dos — he was one of the firsts to pull his support out from his friend. So, who’s the traitor now?
The Hyatt 10 was the cabinet’s “civil society”. They are well known to have untainted reputations. They stand for what they thought is right. As what Dinky Soliman said, my allegiance to the president stops when my allegiance to the people I serve is compromised.
(With some adoptation from the July 12 commentary of DZMM anchor Anthony Taberna, who, by the way, was my high school classmate back in General de Jesus Academy. Uy, Antonio! Great to see you very successful in your field. Let’s chat over a cup of coffee one of these days. Contact me.)
